Mediated Haptic Interpersonal Communication for Smart Multimedia Applications

Abstract:

This tutorial presents the history of mediated haptic interpersonal communication technologies for facilitating social touch from a distance. The motivation behind these technologies is to support co-presence and feelings of togetherness between remote partners, and more broadly, facilitate accessible, intimate interactions at a distance. This tutorial begins with a tour of early devices, then covers more recent innovations. Lastly, this tutorial presents key design considerations including those related to design space as well as design issues.
